Sisters Doing It for Theselves Share Bingo Jackpot

|

A 48-year-old bingoer from Kirkby has told the UK bingo operating body that she will share some £20,000 in bingo winnings with her sister. She has been a bingo fan since she was 18 and plays the game with her sister as often as she can at her local Gala Bingo Club in Telegraph Way. "I was shocked when I realised I had won. Everybody was cheering so I was a bit embarrassed but I'm very happy."

Other members of her family set to benefit from her bingo win include her children and grandchildren, who will be treated this Christmas.

Her sister plans to use her share of the winnings to go on a family holiday as well as carry out home improvements.

Meanwhile, a man from Anglesey who says he has been playing bingo "for donkey's years" is celebrating winning £22,500 while on holiday in Blackpool.

Riva Bingo Demands Action

|
Riva Gaming's chief executive Simon Hannah warned in the Financial Times that as many as a hundred UK land bingo clubs could close within the next six months if taxation on the industry is not changed. He warned that the 'double taxation' imposed by the combined VAT and gross profit tax is putting the industry at a significant commercial disadvantage.

"Where betting shops and casinos only pay 15 percent gross profit tax, we must also pay 17.5 percent VAT on our bingo income, putting us at a significant commercial disadvantage," the bingo company executive said.

Riva is one of the most technologically progressive of the bingo operators in the UK, introducing electronic bingo innovations earlier this year.

The industry is meeting with government to discuss the matter this week.

Profits halved at bingo operator

|
toptenbingo.jpg
The smoking ban and new gambling laws have created a few problems for bingo operators this year. Top Ten Holdings is amoungst those affected, it has 38 clubs across Wales, the Midlands and the North-West, saw pre-tax profits fall by more than half to £381,000 in the six months to September 30.

The company has also had new restrictions on gaming machines as well as an increased tax burden.

In October larger rival Rank, owner of the Mecca bingo chain warned of slumping revenues. Investec analyst Matthew Gerard expects Top Ten's full year pre-tax profits to be £500,000, compared to £2.8m previously "We are concerned trading could deteriorate further in colder weather." . Shares in the St Albans firm, which began the year at 87.5p, slipped 5% to a new record low of 38p today.

Top Ten chairman Sir Aubrey Brocklebank said, "Average customer spending levels and club admissions remain very unpredictable and it is difficult to discern any clear trends."  The company is riding out the double impact of the bans and new laws with a cost-cutting plan to reduce overheads. It has also sold five less profitable clubs to lower its debt. The benefits of the savings should be felt in the first half of the next financial year.

Top Ten called for an overhaul of the tax laws which bingo operators claim unfairly penalises the sector.
Bingo participation fees are subject to both 17.5% in VAT and 15% gross profits tax (GPT), although bookmakers are only subject to the GPT. Top Ten has joined other operators in lobbying the Treasury for a change in the rules.

Lucky bingo players from Leigh

|

Three lucky bingo players from Leigh are celebrating winning over £160,000.

Players at the BJ's Bingo Club in Leigh cheered as Jenny Brocklehurst announced a £90,150 win on Sunday.

The previous Sunday £20,070 was won by a differnt player on the National Bingo Game.

On October 31, someone else scooped the £50,000 jackpot. A spokesman said: "All our winners have shouted house on the National Bingo Game, and to win the National Jackpot you have to be the lowest call in any of the 470 clubs playing nationwide, to win the £100,000 top prize and the club prize of £150."

But more was to come. Because five numbers on her completed ticket were also BIG'N numbers that night, she was just one number away from scooping the Silver Jackpot, which would of won her an additional £120,000.

There have already been six winners of the silver jackpot since the game started in September, while the Platinum prize is yet to have its first winner and currently stands at £1m.

Gala Bingo club in Wigan

|

Following a £22,500 national bingo jackpot success, most players might already be jolly.

But for one recent winner of the prize, it's a case of Jolley by name, jolly by nature, reports National UK Bingo.

Debbie Jolley, a 22-year-old bingo player from Wigan, scooped the cash after completing her full house in 47 calls.

"My mum was talking to a friend on the other side of the club when it was announced, so she came running over to me and gave me a big hug," Ms Jolley reveals.

Unlucky for some 13?

|

Number 13 really does seem to be unlucky when it comes to the lottery, for it has appeared fewer times than any other ball in the UK s National Lottery.

As it turns out, 13 has come up only 146 times, eight fewer than any other ball, ever since the lottery was launched in 1994. Not appearing in 49 consecutive draws between July and December 1997, the doomed numbered ball is followed by 6, 9 and 11.

How To Make The Game Of Bingo Work For Almost Every Subject In Your Classroom

Bingo is a wonderful teaching tool to have at your fingertips no matter what you are teaching. You can even make it up as you go along! The basic premise of Bingo is simple: players start with a grid filled with answers and they cover up spaces as the corresponding item is called from the Bingo "caller." Winners make a complete line going vertically, horizontally, or diagonally. Or, you can play "Black Out" which means the winner is the first person who covers all of the spots on the card.
