Paddy Power and Intercasino breach advertising regs
The UK's Advertising Standards Agency have deemed that a couple of adverts for Intercasino and Paddy Power should not be shown again. Paddy Power's ad was deemed to link gambling to seduction and Intercasino's potentially appealing to younger people and / or children.
I've had a trawl through You Tube to find the ads they describe so you can see for yourself why this decision has been made.
This is one of the Intercasino adverts that ASA felt appealed to younger people. It shows three dwarves (am I allowed to say that or is it politically incorrect?) ringing bells and then being pulled upwards only to come back down as cherries. The next InterCasino advert is a take off of popular Japanese TV programme, Takeshi's Castle which I know that my children absolutely adore.
I couldn't actually find the Paddy Power Trader advert that has been banned on You Tube so I went along to the Paddy Power Blog and found a still of it there with the word "Censored" plastered across it. In their blog they say about their marketing department "They like to think they're a clever bunch, but our work shy colleagues in the Paddy Power marketing department have got us into trouble.....again". When they use the word "again" they are referring to the previous advertisement showing a man breast feeding a baby.
They go on to say how ASA linked their advert with "increased sexual prowess" and then ask their readers to vote as to wether the advert is actually offensive.
In all honesty I don't find any of them offensive or appealing to the younger generation but then I am not the ASA. I visited the ASA website and read through the adjudication for the Paddy Power advert and the assessment says that the ad was " likely to be seen to play on a traditional stereotype of male attractiveness that was sometimes prejudiced against shorter men and to suggest that desirable female companionship was attainable for short men too through the enhanced attractiveness provided by wealth (acquired by gambling). "
I could get onto my soapbox here but I shall refrain and let people make their own minds up as to wether they agree or disagree with the ASA's findings.
