Yet another Mecca Bingo hall is facing imminent closure but the patrons of the club in Swindon have really tried hard to stop the powers that be from going ahead by getting a petition together signed by all the halls members.

The hall was first opened in 1974 closed yesterday and was sold by The Rank Group to the local council as part of the regeneration programme of the town centre.

Some of the regulars at the bingo hall in Regent Circus have spoken of their anger and frustration at the closure.

Helen O' Sullivan (pictured left with the petition) had been a member of the club for 20 years. The 66 year old said "I am so upset that it is closing.  I used to spend all day there on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. That was my entertainment. Now it is gone. To some of us it is like losing a limb. It seems nobody thinks about the older people in this town."

Helen also went on to say that she knows the first name of everybody who plays at the bingo hall.

She said: "Now we will be split up. Most won't be able to go to the bingo in Greenbridge because many of them used to get a taxi home. It is an £8 or £9 taxi ride from Greenbridge, and we just can't afford that."
