Buckingham Bingo boss jailed for IOU's
Monday 14th April 2008 saw a bingo manager from Buckingham Bingo jailed for fraud after she wrote nearly £47,000 worth of IOU's and left them in the company safe.
Helen Walker was a manager of Buckingham Bingo in Peterlee and was salaried at £46,000. It was reported that she took the money to help pay off mounting debts.
The Crown Court in Durham heard how the theft came to light after the company noticed a £16,000 deficit and planned to check the company safe for which Walker was not responsible. The prosecutor, Richard Cowen was reported as saying "When she was told she became nervous and said that if they did come and check, she would be 'gone'. They did come and check the safe and Walker left as she had threatened. The figure found to be missing was nearer £47,000 than the suspected £16,000."
Last August at the police interview she refused to comment but at a later interview Walker admitted taking the money and intended to pay it back but the situation spiralled out of control.
On jailing Walker the judge, Judge Guy Whitburn QC said "It can't be assumed anyone who steals a large sum like this, who is in a position of responsibility, can do anything other than go to prison."
