My time as a Chat Host - part 1
Having spent a little time working at an online bingo site as a chat monitor I don't profess to be the oracle but there are some definite requirements for taking on the role of a chat host.
First at foremost you need to have a great personality!! If you are lacking in this area in real life then you aren't going to be able to express a personality in the real world! You need to be able to laugh at yourself and with others but know the limitations and the invisible line at online bingo that cannot be crossed. As a chat host you are what brings players back, the forefront of the sites online bingo community.
Promotions at a site are all well and good because wouldn't we all like to win a car or thousands of pounds - percentage wise, how many online bingo players actually do? Without the online bingo chat host there isn't anybody to run the chat games providing you with an opportunity to win some free bingo money.
As with most customer based jobs you will come across people from all walks of life, all creeds and colours, young and old, rich and poor - and you as a host have to be able to cater for all.
What is acceptable for one player in chat may not be acceptable to another and as a host you need to be able to control a room when all around are losing their heads. An example of an incident I was involved in was the use of the word "crap". I personally base my language filter on what I wouldn't find acceptable language coming from my child. This word was not acceptable in my eyes and as such I asked the player, using a subtle macro, to watch his language.
What ensued was tantamount to baiting from the player involved, an indepth conversation about how the word came from the inventor of the toilet "Mr.Crapper" and how he didn't feel this was a swear word etc etc Numerous warnings followed to no avail - at which point I had to boot him (remove him from the chat program at the online bingo site).
Although I firmly believe that ultimately Chat Monitors / Hosts are actually just glorified players - they do have to be able to control a room. I watched the room and could see a debate about to start as to what is acceptable and what isn't and once you get into that situation players will push their luck with your filter - wouldn't we all? Luckily the site I was working at was a small site - average of 10 players in a room at a time so control of the room was fairly easy.
If you remember one rule - treat others as you would want to be treated yourself, show the players respect and you will get it back in abundance.
To be continued...............
